German Federal Minister of Finance Scholz visits GICON project construction site

On behalf of eins Energie in Sachsen GmbH & Co.KG, two engine-driven co-generation plants and a wood-fired co-generation plant for heat and electricity are being built in Chemnitz.

On 6 August, Federal Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited one of the currently most important project sites of the engineering service provider GICON and its subcontractor BGD ECOSAX GmbH and was informed about the status of the work. The politician had come to the construction site in Chemnitz together with Saxony's Minister of Economics and Labor Martin Dulig and Chemnitz's Mayor Barbara Ludwig to find out about the status of the energy transition project.

GICON - expertise and construction supervision for a clean environment

Since 2018, GICON, together with its project partner BGD ECOSAX GmbH, has been responsible for the relocation of a complete photovoltaic plant at the HKW Nord I site, the first preliminary expert opinions including the planning of the clearance and, since April 2019, for the technical site management of the site clearance. The first power plant is to be commissioned as early as 2022. At the Altchemnitz HKW site, there will also be a site clearance prior to the construction of a second engine-driven co-generation plant, the implementation of which will also be accompanied by GICON and BGD ECOSAX on site.

A total of two engine-driven co-generation plants and one wood-fired co-generation plant will be erected at three locations in Chemnitz. This will supply 400,000 households. The methane-fueled engines can burn natural gas, biogas or syngas. All in all, the new plants reduce CO2 emissions by around 60 percent compared to the previous technology - this corresponds to a reduction in CO2 emissions equivalent to that of approx. 260,000 automobiles.

The goal of the region and the energy operator eins Energie is to achieve a complete phase-out of lignite by 2029.
