GICON® - Grossmann Ingenieur Consult GmbH is part of the development project in the West African country which will run until 2023.
A research, demonstration and training center for sustainable environmental technologies is to be built near the Ghanaian city of Kumasi by 2021. The center will include waste sorting, organic waste fermentation, biomass gasification, composting, a large-scale PV plant as well as laboratory and classroom facilities. GICON® - Grossmann Ingenieur Consult GmbH (GICON® Consult) is an internationally-positioned service and research company that is part of the Federal Government's funding program and will, among other things, promote planning, construction and commissioning support as well as development and participation in R&D and training programs for organic waste fermentation. In 2022 and 2023, the German project partners want to provide comprehensive support for the future Ghanaian operators and enable them to use the center independently and sustainably in the long term.

During the kick-off meeting at the end of January, the site on which the new center is to be built was officially opened with a ground-breaking ceremony. GICON® Consult Managing Director Dr. Hagen Hilse: "It is exciting to see the energy with which Ghana is addressing this topic. As an internationally-established company, we are glad to be able to actively support such a project". During the three-day meeting between local and German partners, dates and objectives for the next milestones were also specified and the first concrete steps were agreed upon.

The project "Waste2 Energy: Hybrid Energy as a Sustainable Solution for Ghana" is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and supported by the Project Management Organization Jülich and has a total budget of almost 6 million euros. GICON Consult's project partners from Germany are the University of Rostock (overall project management), the DBFZ, the SRH University Berlin and Global Enertec GmbH. From the Ghanaian side, about 15 different partners are involved, including several universities, governmental institutions, NGOs and companies.
